Southern Living house plans

Southern living house plans should ideally reflect the ideals, culture and mannerisms of the south. There are certain elements of the southern culture that make it stand apart from other areas of the country, and the southern way of life reflects that somewhat in features of the prototypical southern house. One of these key elements is the simple porch.

In any serious discussion of southern living house plans, porches have to be included. The porch was and still remains an integral part of southern culture. This dates back to the days before air conditioning, when southerners had to go outside in hope of a cool breeze to try and combat the heavy humidity. (Non southerners don't realize how intense the humidity can be until they take a trip there; if you travel to Atlanta in August, when you walk in the open air for the it feels like stepping into a sauna.)

The porch plays a key role in southern living house plans because it was also the center of conversation and gentility that southerners developed a reputation for. Family members would frequently discuss topics of the day in the cool afternoon, something that still goes on to this day.
So next time you find yourself in the south, enjoy glass of iced tea on a shaded porch in the sunny afternoon and enjoy the fact that you are participating in a tradition.
